The The Murgo Company was established in 1860 when Senator Luigi Gravina granted the Scammacca family approximately 30 hectares of vineyard on Mount Etna, the site of what is now the San Michele Estate. Over a century later, Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo transformed the estate into the modern Tenuta San Michele farm, which serves as the core of the company’s operations today.
The Etna wine region, located on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, is renowned for its unique volcanic terroir. The rich, mineral-laden soils, combined with high altitudes and a diverse microclimate, create ideal conditions for producing distinctive wines. Native grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio shine in elegant, complex reds, while Carricante is celebrated for fresh, vibrant whites. The region's steep vineyards and ancient winemaking traditions contribute to its reputation as one of Italy's most exciting and dynamic wine areas.
