Johann’s Garden pays tribute to the early German Silesian settlers of the Barossa, many of whom bore the name Johann and whose traditions shaped the region’s viticulture. This Grenache–Mataro blend is made using traditional open-top fermentation, a nod to their enduring winemaking culture. Sourced from low-yielding Barossa Old Vines (35+ years), the fruit comes from gnarled bush and trellised vineyards rooted in diverse soils from clay loam with limestone to deep sandy loam. The name itself reflects the German term der Weingarten—“the vineyard”—that growers lovingly referred to as their garden.

  • Founded in 1868, Henschke is one of Australia’s great family-owned estates, now in its sixth generation under Stephen and Prue Henschke. Based in the Eden Valley, the winery is celebrated worldwide for Hill of Grace, its single-vineyard Shiraz sourced from vines planted in the 1860s, alongside other benchmarks such as Mount Edelstone and Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon. The family champions low-yielding old vines, meticulous vineyard care, and a strong commitment to organics and biodynamics. Their wines, particularly from Eden Valley and Barossa Valley sites, combine power, elegance, and age-worthiness, making Henschke a cornerstone of fine Australian wine.

  • The Barossa Valley, about an hour northeast of Adelaide, is one of Australia’s most historic and celebrated wine regions. Settled by German immigrants in the mid-19th century, it is renowned for its warm climate and ancient soils that yield deeply flavoured, powerful wines. The region is home to some of the oldest continuously producing vines in the world, with Shiraz its signature variety—rich, concentrated, and age-worthy. Grenache and Mataro (Mourvèdre) are also key, along with robust Cabernet Sauvignon and increasingly refined whites such as Riesling from the cooler Eden Valley subregion. A combination of heritage, old vines, and a strong community of family growers has cemented Barossa’s reputation as the heart of Australian red wine.
