Clos de Gamot is a historic winery in Cahors, renowned for its unwavering dedication to Malbec, the grape that defines the region. Established in 1610, the Jouffreau family has passed down traditional winemaking practices through generations, preserving the authenticity and legacy of their craft. Despite challenges, they have remained steadfast, cultivating vines as old as 1885 and producing wines of remarkable intensity and character.
The estate is situated on the second and third terraces of the Lot River, with soils rich in pebbles, gravel, and quartz. Committed to sustainable farming, they forgo herbicides, opting for labor-intensive vineyard management that respects nature. In the cellar, grapes are carefully sorted and vinified by plot, with gentle techniques to ensure balance.
Today, the family tradition is carried on by Jean Jouffreau’s daughters, son-in-law Yves Hermann, and his grandson. They maintain a philosophy of patience and respect for nature, with a focus on bottle aging to allow their wines to tell a story over time.
The Cahors wine region, located in southwestern France, is the historic home of Malbec, often referred to locally as "Côt" or "Auxerrois." Renowned for its bold and structured red wines, Cahors is characterized by its unique terroir of limestone plateaus and river terraces along the Lot River, with soils rich in clay, gravel, and limestone. This combination produces wines with deep color, rich tannins, and the potential to age gracefully.
Cahors has a winemaking history dating back to Roman times and gained prominence during the Middle Ages as a key supplier of "Black Wine" to European royalty. Today, the region balances tradition and modernity, with producers embracing both classic and innovative techniques. The wines of Cahors often display dark fruit flavors, earthy undertones, and firm structure, making them a benchmark for Malbec worldwide.
