Tokaj, famously proclaimed by Louis XIV as "the wine of kings and the king of wines," has built a legendary reputation over its four-hundred-year history. Among its most revered vineyards, Oremus has been recognized for its exceptional quality since 1630 and continues to receive universal acclaim.
Located in the heart of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in northeastern Hungary, the village of Tolcsva is home to the esteemed Oremus winery. This historic estate produces some of the world's finest Aszú wines, with Oremus Nectar standing out as a particularly remarkable expression. With an exceptionally high residual sugar content—often exceeding 500 grams per liter—this intensely rich wine has a naturally low alcohol level (1–3%) due to incomplete fermentation.
The production of Aszú wines is labor-intensive, with individual berries hand-picked at a painstakingly slow pace—each picker harvesting only 5 to 10 kilograms per day. The berries are left to settle for 15 to 20 days, during which their own weight gently extracts their juice. The must is then transferred to 50-liter glass containers for an extended, slow fermentation before aging for two years in 68-liter "átalag" barrels. This is followed by bottle aging, which can span decades, allowing the wine to develop its full complexity.
At the pinnacle of Tokaj’s wines is Eszencia—pure, concentrated nectar that represents the soul of Oremus. With its unmatched intensity and depth, it is considered a truly divine wine, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.

Oremus is a prestigious winery in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region of northeastern Hungary, renowned for producing some of the world’s finest Aszú wines. With a history dating back to 1630, it is widely recognized for its exceptional vineyard holdings and meticulous winemaking. In 1993, the esteemed Spanish winery Vega Sicilia acquired Oremus, bringing its expertise and commitment to excellence to this historic estate. Under Vega Sicilia’s ownership, Oremus has continued to uphold Tokaj’s centuries-old winemaking traditions while refining its techniques to produce world-class wines. The estate is particularly known for Oremus Nectar, an intensely rich and highly concentrated sweet wine, and Eszencia, a rare and legendary Tokaji wine celebrated for its extraordinary depth and purity.
The Tokaj wine region, located in northeastern Hungary, is one of the world’s most historic and prestigious wine-producing areas. Recognized as the first official wine appellation in 1737, it is renowned for its unique terroir, which combines volcanic soils, a continental climate, and the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, creating the perfect conditions for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This natural phenomenon is key to producing Tokaji Aszú, the region’s legendary sweet wine.
Tokaj is home to several indigenous grape varieties, most notably Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Sárga Muskotály, which contribute to the complexity and longevity of its wines. While best known for its Aszú and Eszencia wines—prized for their richness, acidity, and age-worthiness—Tokaj also produces exceptional dry Furmint wines, showcasing the region’s versatility.
With centuries of winemaking tradition and a UNESCO World Heritage designation, Tokaj remains a benchmark for sweet wines globally while gaining recognition for its evolving dry wine styles.
